In Taiwan, a significant resource gap exists between rural and urban areas when it comes to children’s learning environments. Despite state and social efforts to improve facilities in remote areas, a shortage of teachers and learning opportunities remains a pressing issue.

BenQ Materials believes that every child, regardless of their background, deserves access to a high-quality education to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for their future development.

To address this, we launched the Science Camp project, which has been running for ten years now. This project transforms complex knowledge into easy-to-understand lessons and hands-on experiences to foster children's interest in science and cultivate their independent thinking and problem-solving skills.

By doing so, we’re committed to narrowing the gap in educational resources and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. Over the past decade, the project has yielded remarkable results and earned the Silver Award at the 2024 Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards.

Creating Social Value and Impact
Since launching in 2014, Science Camp has had a significant impact on nearly 750 students in rural areas. Many schools we collaborated with have reported a substantial increase in students' willingness to learn after participating in the camp.

Their participation in the normal school curriculum has also improved significantly, confirming the positive effects of Science Camp on students. Teachers have also benefited from the program, saying it enriches the natural science curriculum and helps students understand how science applies to daily life. Many teachers have also exchanged ideas on course design with BenQ Materials’ volunteers, incorporating these inspirations into their own teachings.

The Driving Force Behind the Scenes
Science Camp’s success is largely due to the dedication of our employee volunteers. From the program’s design to its implementation, they have worked closely with education experts, with the goal of creating engaging, hands-on activities that help students apply what they’ve learned.

The curriculum is aligned with a focus on literacy, which motivates children to learn and develop a broad range of knowledge and skills. By explaining complex principles in a lively, easy-to-understand way, volunteers aim to build up a sense of achievement and spark enthusiasm for learning.

As Science Camp is closely tied to BenQ Materials’ core technologies in the optical and medical industries, volunteers with relevant backgrounds have designed a curriculum specifically for elementary school students. And often, they step into the role of lecturers, taking the fun in learning up a level.

Leading Change to Inspire Curiosity for Science

To address the disparity in education resources between urban and rural areas, we have set out strict evaluation criteria for the Science Camp program. To qualify, schools must be situated in rural areas and facing a shortage of learning resources — ensuring that our support reaches those who need it most.

In line with the Ministry of Education's recognition of schools in remote areas, invitations are sent to schools in Taoyuan and Yunlin, areas where BenQ Materials’ factories are located.

Having gained valuable insights from our experience with Science Camp, we’ve recognized that remote schools often lack sufficient scientific equipment for experiments. To address this need, we introduced the Science Education Grant in 2024, offering financial support to select schools to purchase science-related lab equipment and thereby expanding educational resources in rural areas. Furthermore, we’ve also provided wound dressing supplies (one of BenQ Materials’ product lines) to the schools’ health centers to enhance their medical care capabilities.

As a company rooted in science, we recognize that science is not confined to textbooks but is an integral part of everyday life, holding the potential to unlock a vast range of opportunities for children. Through interactive lessons and hands-on experiments that ignite a passion for scientific discovery in young minds, we hope that Science Camp inspires children to pursue careers in science.

BenQ Materials is committed to leaving a lasting legacy by partnering with rural elementary schools to bring the transformative power of Science Camp to underserved communities, empowering young minds and nurturing a lifelong impact.
