Less Than 0.5% Savings, Still Worth Doing: BenQ Materials Turns Small Energy Recovery into Carbon and Community Benefits

Improving on Existing Energy Efficiency

BenQ Materials has long supported the circular economy by improving energy use in its processes. After production, unused heat becomes flash steam, which was previously released into the air.

When residents once mistook the white plume as pollution, the company recognized that energy management also affects community trust. In 2024, BenQ Materials installed heat recovery equipment to convert flash steam into 80°C hot water for cleanroom air-conditioning, allowing heat reuse while improving community confidence.

Small Impact, Strong Commitment

The project saves 160,000 cubic meters of natural gas and cuts 250 tons of carbon emissions each year, equal to about two-thirds of Daan Forest Park’s annual carbon absorption. It also received voluntary carbon credits.

Although energy savings are below 0.5% and payback takes 8–9 years, the company still proceeded voluntarily. The project not only reduces carbon but also resolves community concerns, showing its commitment to sustainability and stakeholders.

Expanding the Circular Economy

Heat recovery is part of BenQ Materials’ circular approach. The company has recycled process water for over a decade, reaching a 95% recovery rate. It also recycles solvents and converts waste plastics into fuel.

Even with limited savings, BenQ Materials continues recovering usable energy. This supports long-term carbon reduction while benefiting both the environment and the community.
