Each April, BenQ Materials launches “Low-Carbon Living Month” in response to Earth Day. The program begins with Earth Hour at the end of March, encouraging employees to take simple actions to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.
Launching in Sync with the World: A 14-Year Energy-Saving Marathon
Earth Hour is a global campaign held on the last Saturday of March.
Since 2012, BenQ Materials has participated every year. Over time, this one-hour action has become part of the company’s culture, strengthening its commitment to sustainability.
Cross-Department Participation: One Hour of Persistence Accumulates Nearly 200 kg of Carbon Reduction
The activity is carried out across departments while ensuring safe operations.
At the Taoyuan plant, one hour of lights-off each year saves 30 kWh. Over 14 years, this totals 420 kWh and about 199 kg of carbon reduction(Note 1). This is enough to power a laptop for over 400 days(Note 2).
Although results differ by site, the overall impact continues to grow. This shows that small actions, when repeated, can make a real difference.
After 14 years, Earth Hour has become more than an event—it is now part of BenQ Materials’ ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Note 1: Carbon reduction calculation: 420 kWh × electricity emission factor 0.474 kg CO₂e per kWh (based on the latest standard from the Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs).
Note 2: Based on an average commercial laptop power consumption of 40W (420,000 Wh / 40W = 10,500 hours, approximately 437.5 days).
